Where to Buy English Books in Guangzhou?

Want to buy an English book? You may not need to take tiresome journey to Hong Kong or anxiously wait for a package from aboard any longer. Here in downtown Guangzhou lies a big English Book Shop "New Page," which is a good choice for English book hunters.

  

Located on the fourth floor of Guangzhou Book-selling Center, next to Tianhe Sports Center, New Page provides a dozen categories of original English books, from travel guides like Lonely Planet to Chinese/Cantonese Learning textbooks, from literary masterpieces to art reference. The western-style decoration, English songs playing and the cozy chairs make the shop a comfortable place to buy books. 

"New Page opened on Nov. 23rd, 2005. After one-year of operation, we have already attracted lots of customers, both Chinese and foreigners, 50/50." Miss Nicole Xian told the reporter.

As for the prices, they vary largely due to the diversity of books. Some art books are over RMB 1,000. However, you can also get fiction here for around RMB 20. "In fact, when you take the paper and high printing quality into consideration, even the art books are not so expensive," Nicole said.

If you are a big English book fan and want to be a smart customer, here are some tips for you:

1, apply for a member card.

Pay RMB 120 to the business center on the first floor of Guangzhou Book Selling Center, left of the entrance, and you can get a member card. With the card, you can get books worth RMB 100 for free from anywhere in most stores Book Selling Center from underground to 4th floor except San Lian Bookstore and some electric apparatus stores. Each time you buy a book, the credit points of the card will be increased. Less than 3,000 points, you get 5% discount, above 3,000, 12% off.

Guangzhou Book Selling Center has promotions occasionally. You can get really good prices during promotions.

Although online book shopping is under construction, you can still place an order with the book shop by telephone (3884 5482). However, if the shop doesn't have the stock, you may have to wait for 2-3 months.

Up to now, the shop only sells books, English videos and magazines are not available.

The business hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. every day.
