History
Sun Yat-sen University, founded in 1924 by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, is the leading university in South China. It is a comprehensive university providing higher education for studies in natural sciences, humanities, social sciences, medicine, technology and management.
The teaching program for Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) in the University has enjoyed both promising development and favorable reputation since its initiation in early 1980s. The past two decades has witnessed the progress of the University’s CFL teaching and training in various aspects.

In July 1981, the Center for Chinese Training was established as one of the earliest CFL teaching and training centers in China since the nation’s opening-up and economic reform.

In 1984, the training center launched a program for Cantonese training, the first such program ever provided in Mainland China.

In 1991, the training center set up the first testing center for Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) in South China.

In 1992, the training center was renamed as the Center for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (CTCFL) and was affiliated to the newly formed School of Foreign Languages of the University in the same year.

On January 13, 2004, the School for Overseas Educational Exchange (SOEE) was established. Both the Center for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and the Administrative Office of International Students were merged into SOEE, which is responsible for the admission of international students, CFL teaching and training as well as other projects of educational exchanges and international collaborations. Since then the CFL teaching and training in the University is enhanced to a new height.

SOEE is located on the South Campus, one of the four campuses of the University along the south bank of the Pearl River in Guangzhou. The picturesque campus sceneries and advanced facilities make it an ideal place for study.

Programs
The Department of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language ( formerly the Center for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language) of SOEE provides ranges of programs for students . There are both long-term and short-term Chinese learning and training programs designed to meet the respective needs of the students from elementary, intermediary to advanced levels. There is also a Cantonese training program.

The School provides different degree programs related with Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL):

Since 1997, a undergraduate program of Chinese (as a Foreign Language) has been launched for students applying for bachelor degree.

Since 1987, a master degree program for CFL teaching and learning under the major of Modern Chinese was launched.

Since 2001, programs for CFL research under the major of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics have been initiated to students applying for master and doctor degrees.

The Department has designed ranges of general CFL programs (both Mandarin and Cantonese) and provides teaching and training courses to students of various types, including Chinese language trainees, undergraduates, M.A. students and doctoral candidates. Such overall teaching programs are rarely seen in China.
