New expressway to link GZ, SZ

Updated Beijing Time

CONSTRUCTION on a new expressway linking Shenzhen and Guangzhou commenced on Mar the 26th.

The 89-kilometer-long eight-lane highway, the second between the two cities, starts from Huangpu District in Guangzhou, and connects Dongguan City's Mayong, Hongmei, Shatian, Humen and Chang'an townships with Shajing, Fuyong, Xixiang subdistricts of Shenzhen's Bao'an District, before ending at the Moon Bay in Nanshan District.

The 16-billion-yuan (US$1.97 billion) road will shorten the traveling time between the two cities by one-third compared with the present Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, and is expected to be ready by November 2009.

The new expressway will connect with the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Western Corridor, which is under construction.

Experts believe the road will further boost economic cooperation between cities in the Pan-Pearl River Delta region.

Guangdong will invest more than 299 billion yuan in infrastructure construction by 2010, which will include 25,000 kilometers of roads and 2,000 kilometers of highways, according to the Chinese-language media.
