The center is a modern sports complex, situated at Dongpu, Tianhe district in eastern Guangzhou outskirt.
It was built mainly for the 9th Chinese National Game in 2001 by the Guangdong Provincial People's Government, covering an area of 1.01 million square meters. With 21 small stands, the stadium can accommodate 80,000 spectators. Its roof looks just like a floating ribbon, symbolizing that China will develop rapidly as a soaring dragon in the coming century. The seats look like thousands of colorful petals, together forming the city flower of Guangzhou, viz. wood-cotton flower.
