Memorial Park Opens for Opium War Hero

After months of construction on Haiyin Square, the Lin Zexu Memorial Park opened to citizens yesterday (August 24th). Spanning over 250,000 square meters, the new park boasts abundant greenery, flowers, fountains, three ancient Yangwei canons and a memorial statue in honor of Lin Zexu.

Lin Zexu was an official from the Qing dynasty known for his role in the events which lead to the first Opium War (1839-1842) and in particular the destruction of large quantities of opium on Haiyin Sizhou beach, today the location of Haiyin Square.
