Bahe Academy of Cantonese Opera

粤剧八和会馆

Updated Beijing Time

The Bahe Academy, located on En'ninglu, has a history of over 100 years.

Pictures of Cantonese Opera artists from several generations were displayed in the Bahe Academy.

The Bahe Academy with a history of 119 years has undergone many ups and downs. It used to have 8 branches but now there is only the one named Luanyu left. The Shenhe Hall stopped operating in the 1950s because of historical reasons. Half a century later, with the advocacy of artists from Bahe Hall and Theater Troups, the Bahe Academy has again been put into operation and soon the 1st council would be produced.

Wang Weiqiang, the Deputy Chairman of Bahe, said the reconstruction project of the Bahe Academy which had an investment of 60 million Yuan would be carried out in a step-by-step manner. The second-phase of the project would be expanded to the west and a Cantonese Opera Exhibition Hall with more than 600 square meters would be built. By then the Academy would exhibit all kinds of materials related to the Cantonese Opera, Cantonese music and famous artists. Some exclusive exhibition halls of certain artists will be built as well.

In the 3rd phase of the project a Cantonese Opera square would be held, including an indoor square and an outdoor square which cover an area of over 5,000 square meters. There would be rooms for artists to practice their skills and ordinary citizens could watch them. Citizens would also have access to tea and music.
