The Lianhua (Lotus Blossom) Hill of Fanyu sits on the banks of Shiziyang Lake, near the Pearl River estuary. The hill, covering 2.33 square km, was a large quarry in ancient times. Its stones, of all shapes and sizes, rival the stone forest in Yunnan. The Lianhua (Lotus Blossom) Pagoda built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) provides a panoramic view of the Pearl River Delta. On the hill sits a statue of the Goddess of Mercy. The 41-meter-tall Bodhisattva, looking out to sea, was cast from 120 tons of bronze and gilded with 9 kg of gold. It is the largest of its kind in the world. The trees on the hill are green perennially, and Lianhua Hill is home to tens of thousands of gray cranes. The hill hosts a peach blossom festival and a lotus blossom festival every year.
