The Double Seventh Festival falls next Monday (August 16), the 7th day of the 7th lunar month. It is a traditional Chinese festival celebrating love and commemorating a Chinese love story between a Cowhand and a Weaver Maid.
On the nights of August 14th and 16th, an event will be held under the banyan tree at the peak of Baiyun Mountain called "Fly the Firebugs". On those nights, over 200 fireflies shall be shining and flying around in the sky. Before, a famous Japanese animation movie called "Grave of the Fireflies" will be shown at the peak, a beautiful setting for young lovers.
This is the first time Guangzhou holds such activity. Due to the firebugs' 3 to 5 days short life span, thousands of firebugs will be flown into Guangzhou from Yunnan. Although environmentalists might criticize the move as a significant waste of energy, less scrupulous lovers will certainly enjoy a beautiful evening admiring the beauty of these insects.
Time for movie showing: 7pm Time for flying the firebugs: 8:30pm, 9:00pm, August 14 and 16 Place: Baiyun Mountain peak
