New Season, New Hats

Updated Beijing Time

Christian Dior once famously remarked, "Without hats we would have no civilization". As winter approaches, hats are being worn more than ever for functional reasons as well as fashion.

Want a new look for the winter? Let's start with hats and caps! A small shop called “S-TOP” has hundreds of hats and caps in different styles. The shop keeper will help you to choose a hat or cap that fits your face and style.

How to Choose a Hat for Specific Facial types:

1. Round faced: Hats with an asymmetrical or irregular brim and brims that roll away from the face. Steer clear of hats that hug the face or head and hats that have a tailored look or a round crown. Brimless hats and round crowns emphasize the roundness in the face.  Choose soft, medium height crowns and trimmings which direct the eye upward.

2. Square faced: Can also benefit from an irregular brim. The broken lines of an asymmetrical brim, such as a hat that turns up on one side and down on the other with a slight droop to the brim that shades the face. Trimmings should be arranged to also follow the lines of the hat -such as being placed on the side of the hat brim that droops. The hat should grace the face, drawing attention away from the facial width.

3. Large faced: Try wide brimmed hats with a slight droop. Brims may turn up at the back or side. For woman who are stout and short, the brim should roll up from the side or the back to add height. For tall large faced women - a drooping brim should be worn to detract attention away from your height. No tall crowns that draw attention to your height and avoid lose fitting hats that overtly emphasize the largeness of the face. Tapered crowns, that are wider at the bottom than at the top, tend to make the face look larger. Trimmings should be small and dainty.

4. Small faced: Small hats with a brim that turns away from the face or an upturned brim with a close fitting back. Trimmings should be small and dainty and hats should hug the head. Oversized brims with large and heavy trims, give the appearance of being top heavy. Avoid crowns that overwhelm the face.

5. Oval faced: This facial type also benefits from irregular brim lined hats. A hat that has the brim slightly turned up or rolled on one side of the hat and droops on the opposite side makes the face appear less ovular. Wear soft crowns that pull to one side and trimmings that are arranged asymmetrically. Brimless hats and hat brims that have points on either side or crowns that have points at the top, make the face appear longer and widen the upper portion of the ovular face.

6. Narrow pointed faced: Hats with a slight drooping brim of moderate width. Semi-soft crowns and hats with small, soft trimmings, such as soft feathers and bows are recommended. Avoid tall hats which roll upward from the face, hats with tailored high crowns, stiff feathers and bows.

7. Sharp, angular faced: Medium sized hats with slightly drooping brims that provide shadow to the face and decrease the faces length are advised. Soft crowns that drape softly on one side are ideal but may not be easy to find. Soft, fluffy trims tend to soften the angular features of the face. Severe brims such as those that roll upward from the face with stiff trimmings should be avoided.

8. Prominent nosed: Choose average sized hats with drooping brims and wide front brims. An upturned back brim draws less attention to the nose. Crowns that rise slightly higher in the front draw the eye upward away from the nose.

9. Turned up or snub nosed: A large or medium size brim with a slight droop will draw attention away from the snubbed nose. Brims that turn upward in the front draw attention to the snubbed nose.

10. If you wear glasses: Draw attention away from the glasses by wearing an up - turned brim or one that turns upward at the front of the hat.
