A Different World of Pets in Guangzhou

Cats and dogs have long been the favorites when it comes to family pets. But not all pets are neither adorable nor loyal companions. More and more people choose to invest their time and affection hairy killer spider, small lizards, white rats and even pigs.

There is a very unusual pet market next to Huadiwan metro station in Liwan District. Here you can find auspicious Japanese Brocade carps worth millions of RMB, pink baby piglets, squirrels, rabbits, hairy spiders and many more. "Brocade carps are Japanese people's favorite," a shopper keeper told us, adding that "in Japan, a brocade carp could live as long as 200 years."

Chinchillas are another favorite since people discovered Hayao Miyazaki's animation stories. Although real chinchillas might not be as cute as Hayao Miyazaki's cartoon ones, they are very popular to Cantonese people due to their small size and reputation of being clean animals.
