Statistics from the Guangdong Social Science Academy show that about 13 percent of foreigners in Guangzhou currently live in Panyu District, particularly at the Clifford Estates area (祈福新村). The English school at Clifford, for example, has four times as many foreign teachers than Chinese.
Opened two years ago, Rosie's Pantry (百味) was the first foreign foodstuff store in Clifford. Only two months later, another store named Euroasia Grocery (欧日韩舍) opened nearby.
"70 percent of the customers are foreigners," a shopkeeper from another store called Oliver (奥利弗) said. "The Chinese prefer foreign snacks and drinks, while flavorings and sauces sell good with foreigners."
Australian Tim, who says he shops at Rosie's Pantry nearly every day, just moved to Clifford this summer. "I can't speak Chinese. Luckily, the shopkeeper can speak English, which is very convenient."
