Updated Beijing Time

Many supermarkets and stores in Guangzhou started to provide or sell environment-friendly bags recently before the Ban of Free Plastic Bags on June 1, and arouse public craze to buy or exchange.

Thousands of people queued yesterday to apply for membership cards to exchange a sort of bio-bags that is sold for ¥15(US.1)each at Jusco stores.

Other environmental bags will come out to public soon at China Plaza, Xindaxin, Grandview, Grandbuy, TeeMall and Friendship Store.

Many reckon these bags will be used for not only shopping convenience, but also taking snacks.

Lots of people are collecting various environmental bags while many intentionally ask for more plastic bags than enough for reserve when shopping.

The unit production cost of the bio-bags is as much as ¥1.4-1.5 (US.2), 10 times higher than the present normal ones. It might be good but too expensive to be popular to the public, according to a plastic industry insider.

The sale volume would perhaps drop in June due to the Ban of Free Plastic Bags, but would recover thanks to the public habit change to using environmental bags, some supermarket managers predicted.
