The Chinese National Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine announced back in December 2009 that french Cognac had become the first foreign geographical product under national protection in China. This means that Cognac producers, distributors and consumers are protected by law and thus guaranteeing quality.
Cognac is the most famous variety of brandy named after the small french town were it is produced. Widely appreciated by Chinese consumers, an auction held in Xiamen recently saw four bottles of Cognac sold for 2.44 million RMB in just ten minutes.
A Cognac degustation was held recently in Dongguan by Camus Cognac, an old French brand now attempting to enter the Chinese market. Since 1863, Camus Cognac has been produced by five generations of the family. With Chinese consumers ready to spend large sums of money, similar promotional events are also being held in Beijing, Shanghai and Fujian.
