Spa comes from Latin "Sanus Per Aguam", which means to get healthy body via water therapy. Another saying says Spa is from a valley of Spau, a town sat in Belgium in the 16th century. In Spau, people could enjoy the hot spring which could cure various kinds of diseases.
The modern concept of spa is now much more than just water therapy. Lots of other natural elements have been applied to the treatment like microelement and fragrant essential oil.
Pearls have been used for health and beauty for over 2,000 years. Chemical analysis shows pearls contain amino acids (building blocks of protein and collagen), minerals including calcium and polysaccharides for skin tone, clarity and smooth texture. It is also known to contain age control nutrients that reduce the transfer of melanin to the skin, hence alleviating dark patches and spots. In traditional Chinese medicine, pearl powder has a cooling effect with balancing properties. It eases inflammation and supports the skin's natural metabolism to heal, rejuvenate, minimise pores and reduce redness. In the Qing Dynasty, Ci'xi, the last Empress Dowager of China, is said to have preferred pearl masks to maintain her complexion.

Shangri-la spa suites, where the Chinese principles of harmony and balance show
One of the most striking features of the spa and one unique to CHI, The Spa, is the lotus pond. As guests are lead to their treatment rooms they find themselves at a serene pool adorned with dramatic sculptural flora. Guests then take one of two paths that cross the water to continue on their journey. Tibetan drums and wall hangings lend the gently lit corridors a sense of opulence while heavy, teak doors make for a grand entrance to the secluded sanctum of the spa suites.

The 1,200-square metre spa was inspired by the legend of Shangri-La. Using many of the architectural principles of a Tibetan temple, it features Himalayan artifacts and design elements, whilst applying the Chinese principles of harmony and balance. The interior design accents include references from tribal embroidered garments and textiles, the mandala symbol, and Tibetan and Chinese antiques.
All the 11 spacious spa suites – three doubles and eight singles – feature CHI, The Spa's signature "spa within a spa" concept, each with herbal steam and shower, relaxation lounge, changing area and vanity areas. They also have their own infinity baths with colour therapy. There are two hydrotherapy suites featuring hydro baths for detoxifying, body slimming and toning treatments.
