About Oktoberfest
A traditional beer festival founded in Southern Germany, Oktoberfest has become 'the' party phenomenon on practically every continent since its inception nearly 200 years ago. Actually beginning in September and ending on the first Sunday in October, all devout followers (and German locals) know its true, romantic origins as the wedding celebration of Bavarian Prince Ludwig and his bride Therese. The festivities were held in 1810 in a huge Munich meadow and went on for days, marking its end with horse races, which all of Bavaria was invited to see. As a result, over 40,000 guests showed to unknowingly take part in what was to become the world's largest beer festival.
This hugely successful celebration of Ludwig's love gave rise to a yearly tradition featuring livestock shows, music and, of course, fabulous food and drink; which eventually became its dominant theme. Barring times of war and disease, this beer-drinking bash has taken place every year, still gracing the very grounds of Theresienwiese ("Therese's fields", named in honor of the Princess), known as "Wies'n" by the locals.
Modern times have brought about many changes, but the "Spirit of Oktoberfest" is still very much alive. The horse races have since disappeared, and the farm show only occurs every few years. Local old-timers have surely sat back in awe as they've watched their quaint festival of days gone by transform into a sixteen day commercial behemoth of brewery tents, vendors and amusements, receiving over six millions visitors annually. An incredible amount of beer equal the entire amount drunk the rest of the year is consumed, along with colossal amounts of wine and sausages.
