Ruan Yunguang (阮云光), born in 1901 in Guangdong and is without doubt one of the most influential Zhongshan-born artists of the 20th century. As a student of Gao Jianfu, a pioneer of the Lingnan school, from 1925, Ruan studied western-style painting at the Guangzhou Art Institute. In 1932, he left for Japan where he continued to learn painting and was greatly influenced by the Japanese artist Watanabe Seitei. He was active in Guangzhou, Shanghai, Zhongshan and Hong Kong until he settled in Hong Kong in 1958.
