China through the Lens of John Thomson 1868-1872

This exhibit will be a part of the China premier of the photography of John Thomson.

A Scottish photographer, John Thomson (1837-1921) traveled to Asia in 1862 and established a photo studio. Attracted by Asian culture, he settled in Hong Kong in 1868. Thomson then spent the next four years in Guangdong, Fujian, Beijing, North China, East China and the Yangtze River Delta, recording local people and culture via photography.

In addition to landscapes, portraits, architecture and family life, Thomson shot many photos of Chinese women. The quality, significance, wide themes and artistry of his images made him a pioneer and highly influential photographer of the era.

All 150 pieces owned by the London-based Wellcome Library will tour Beijing, Fujian, Guangzhou and Dongguan.
