The National Museum from Musical Clock to Street Organ in Utrecht, the Netherlands contains the world's largest collection of automatic musical instruments. The 50 musical instruments on display at the Guangdong Museum of Art have been selected from this collection; they include automatic organs, pianos and imitation orchestral instruments. The most special piece is the Garman-made "Hupp Field Violin Phonograph", dubbed one of the most complicated automatic musical instruments in world history. It consists of a piano and three violins and features an ingenious design, dubbed "the eighth wonder of the world" at the Brussels's World Fair in 1910.
The exhibition showcases the history of the development of automatic musical instruments, from the Renaissance to the contemporary era, and gives visitors a sense of Europe's sophisticated mechanical manufacturing processes and Europeans' love affair with music. (english.gz.gov.cn)
