Formerly an ancient clan academy set up by the Deng family in 1895, this museum is also known as the Mansion of General Deng Shichang (邓世昌纪念馆), great hero of the Opium War in 1840.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Deng's death, the Guangzhou government rebuilt the house (which was his birthplace) into a museum in 1994.
Covering an area of 4,700 square meters, the academy is completely intact despite over 100 years of history. Majestic and exquisite, the wood and brick structure is auspiciously situated from south to north and decorated with Lingnan style sculptures.
In addition to exhibits about Deng and the Opium War, other art exhibits are displayed here on a regular basis.
