Velocity by Horse Dance Theater from Taiwan
The Guangdong Modern Dance Festival concluded on July 30th after a week of exciting and intensive performances. To end China's most influential modern dance festival was Velocity performed by Taiwanese man-only troupe Horse Dance Theater.
The quality and diversity of the closing performance, mixing origami, childish games, multimedia and exaggeratedly comic body languages stands to show how speed and velocity affects society. With individuals living rapid and unsustainable lives, the pieces presented during the festival focused on the conflicts, menace, and hopelessness which occurs.
Despite being a relatively young festival presenting an art form yet fairly known to the audience, this year's festival attracted an audience of over 8,000 people. With 70 performances and hundreds of Asian dancers participating in the event, the audience was also invited to take part in 60 master class.
Focusing this year on Asian troupes, the Guangdong modern art festival has arguably become one of the most prominent modern dance platforms in Chinese mainland.
