Ukrainian Violist Maxim: I have a Close Relationship with Rococo

The first symphonic concert of Mahler series was performed at the Guangzhou Xinghai Concert Hall on the evening of March 29. This was a great news for classical music fans. [The concert]

The performers chose "Das Lied Von Der Erde" (The song of the Earth), a large-scale work for two vocal soloists and orchestra created by the Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, as the highlight of their concert.

The repertoire also included Tchaikovsky's "Rococo Variation" and Bruch's "Romance" played by viola player Maxim Rysanov.

Maxim Rysanov is undoubtedly one of the world's best and most charismatic viola players. Originally from the Ukraine he is now based in London after having studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and prior to that at the Central Special Music School in Moscow. He is a prize-winner of several major international awards.

"I love Tchaikovsky. He planed to create a viola variation but finally failed. The Rococo Variation was originally for cello and orchestra and I tried to adapt it for viola this time", smiled Maxim.

"Rococo is full of romance and sadness. It is tragedy. My character has close relation with this kind of music."

It is commonly acknowledged that Malher's music is very difficult to play. According to Maxim however, "Most composers' music is difficult to play, and you need to understand their character."

In cooperating with the Guangzhou Symphonic Orchestra during the 2007-2008 Music Season, Maxim expressed his high praise to the ensemble. "They are very gifted and professional."

The second concert of Mahler series will take place on April 19.
