ProgramⅡ: Point and Line to Plane
Choreographed by Xing Liang

"The interaction among dance, music and lighting spatially thrilled the audience and stretched their imagination. It is a production of very high quality with exquisite taste." - C For Culture, Hong Kong

Inspired by Kandinsky's abstract paintings, dancer-choreographer Xing Liang sets his work to his strong conviction of the purity of dance as art, taking the audience into a world that is uniquely personal, detached, yet compelling and engaging. Driven by his quest for the unorthodox, Xing ultimately challenges the audience expectations of dance. This performance is an excerpt of its Hong Kong premiere in June 2008.

Born in Beijing, Xing Liang graduated in classical dance division from the Beijing Dance Academy in 1991. He was the Gold Prize winner in Tao Li Bei Competition Junior Section and Senior Section. During 1991 and 1992, he was the principal dancer in the Youth Division of the Academy. He joined the Guangdong Modern Dance Company in March 1993.

Xing has won numerous awards including the Gold Award in the Male Solo Class at the 6th Paris International Dance Competition in 1994, "The Top Ten National Performers" in 1996, "The Star of the Century" by the Guangdong Provincial Government in 1997, the Gold Award in the Modern Dance Section at the 8th Paris International Dance Competition for his work I Want to Fly in 1998, the Hong Kong Dance Award for his performance in Ju Dou in 1999, the Silver Award in the Modern Dance Section at the 1st Italy International Dance Competition for his work Night of Dancer and the 2nd Class Award in Choreography at the 5th National Dance Competition for his work Mon Amour Sans in 2001. Xing received the Hong Kong Dance Award again for his works The Enigma of Desire – Dali vs Gala and Stranger Than Fiction in 2004 and 2006 respectively. He received The Hong Kong Arts Development Awards - the Award for Outstanding Young Artist from Hong Kong Arts Development Council in 2008.

Xing was invited to participate in the International Choreographers Residency Programme in the American Dance Festival in 1996. His work Chamber was invited to join Beijing.Hong Kong Modern Dance Festival (Beijing) in 1999. He formed Movement Fibre with Sang Jijia and choreographed Happening Continuous in 2000. His work 180˚ was invited to join Holland Dance Festival in 2001. He was invited by Vancouver Goh Ballet to perform in 2003 for its 25th Anniversary celebration.

Xing's other choreographic works include The Eyes, Requiem, Lumière, 365 Ways of Doing and Undoing Orientalism, That Moment of Arvo Pärt, The Enigma of Desire – Dali vs Gala, Stranger Than Fiction, The Conqueror, Nijinsky and Out Of The Box. Nijinsky has been invited to perform in Beijing after its premiere in Hong Kong, its DVD has been released in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan with critical acclaim.
