Program Description

A Dance on Nüshu:  Women of Language, the Language of Women

Premiered in Hong Kong in 2007 with critical acclaim, Herstory scooped two Hong Kong Dance Awards and has been invited to present at the first "Beijing Dance Festival" for the opening of "Important Cultural Activities for 2008 Beijing Olympic Games" .

Nüshu, literally "female writing", is a unique written language that has been developed and used exclusively over generations by women in the Jiangyong county, Hunan province.

Lai delves into women's fantasies, revealing feelings that are at once delicate and violent. Inspired by the alluringly embroidered Nüshu script , as well as the shimmering prose of two contemporary Hong Kong female writers, Xi Xi and Wong Bik-wan, HerStory may prove to be Lai's magnum opus on the subject of women. Three languages are at play here: ancient Nüshu, modern womanhood, both infused and interpreted by Lai in an excursion between the secret and overt, between text and non-text, all seen via the perceptive body language of CCDC 's dancers.
