About the Artists

Founded in 1982, Pappa TARAHUMARA has offered unique performances under the direction of Hiroshi Koike. Their work is characterized by its Asian sense of time and motion. Performers, stage objects, music, lighting and costume all play equally important roles in their productions. It is when all these elements become one that the spectacle starts to generate its poetry.

Program Description

Employing Anton Chekhov's Three Sisters as its motif, this work draws a parallel between women in Chekhov's Russia with the women in Japan today. Quite unlike Pappa's previous works for big stage, Director Hiroshi Koike gives this tragic comedy a kitchen-sink treatment, interweaving familiar attributes of Japanese pop-culture such as the energy in Jap anime, the indulgence of karaoke and the decadence of Japanese AV soft-porn. The result is surprisingly intimate, erotic and intriguing.

Reviews

"I have seen various productions of Three Sisters , but I've never seen a performance giving me such vivid and strong impact. It goes beyond Chekhov's Three Sisters to reach universality" ——Watanabe Tamotsu, drama critic

"Not even Chekhov could have imagined the Three Sisters in such an erotic, destructive and yet compassionate presentation." ——Minato Chihiro, art critic
