When rhinoceros feeder Ma Lu first sees sexy and mysterious Mingming, he immediately falls in love. However, Mingming is too cold-hearted to return Ma's love, so he kidnaps her out of desperation...
The Drama entitled 'Rhinoceros in Love' is said to symbolize love's blindness – which is like a rhinoceros's poor eyesight. The story is regarded as a 'love bible' by young people.
The play was written by Liao Yimei and directed by her husband Meng Jinghui, both appointed by the China National Drama Theater. As one of the most influential directors of experimental theater in Asia, Meng has had a major impact on the new era of Chinese contemporary drama.
The play has flourished for ten years since its debut at a small theater in Beijing. Since then the classic drama has been staged more than 260 times for over 200,000 spectators nationwide. Over 1,000 versions of the story have been performed on about 200 university campuses.
The production began a 'decade' commemorative tour on February 12, 2009 at the Beijing-based National Theater. It will be the third time to tour the Guangzhou city after its debut in April 2009.
