"The Sound of Music," a musical from the U.S., will soon arrive in the city! Audiences will surely be able to sing along to such well-known melodies as "Edelweiss", "The Lonely Goatherd", and "Do-Re-Mi", some of the chief attractions of this Broadway classic.

After its China tour debuts in Chengdu in April 2008, the celebrated musical will make its seventh stop in Guangzhou. Performances will be given July 26-30 at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.

Based on Maria von Trapp's memoir, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, "The Sound of Music" features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and script by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. Songs from the musical that have become standards include "The Sound of Music", "Edelweiss", "My Favorite Things", "Climb Ev'ry Mountain", and "Do-Re-Mi".

The original Broadway production opened in November 1959, and the show has enjoyed numerous productions and revivals since then. In 1965, it was made into an Academy Award-winning film. The Sound of Music was the final musical written by Rodgers and Hammerstein; Hammerstein died of cancer nine months after the Broadway premiere.
