The Music Box was painter Chen Yifei's fourth film. Principal shooting began in November 2002. Just one month later, Jiang Wen, the male lead walked away from the set and shooting was immediately put on hold. Two full years later, in February 2005, principal shooting resumed with a new male lead, Chen Kun. Director Chen Yifei died suddenly on April 20, just one week shy of the scheduled wrapping day and the film was completed by director Wu Siyuan. The Music Box is about a young Chinese barber's courage for love in war and turmoil from the 1930s to the 1950s.
