This popular annual event now heads into its third year since its inception in 2006. Over 1,000 people and more than 250 teams took part in each of the previous two sessions.

Basketball is a favorite local sport in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province, which boasts the Guangdong Hongyuan Team, professional champions of China's Basketball Association (CBA).

The Tianhe Sports Center is the most popular venue for both Chinese and foreign basketball lovers in Guangzhou.

"3 on 3" basketball matches originated in the United States in the 1990s but have since boomed in China, mainly in big cities, in recent years. The first "3 on 3" basketball tournament in the country was held in Guangzhou in 1995.
