The Guangzhou Children's Hospital is Located on Renmin Zhong Road, Guangzhou, China. It Occupies a space of about 9,000 square meters, It provides 400 beds for over ten thousand patients annually and has almost nine hundred thousand visitors in the out-patient department each year. In March of 1996, the Guangzhou Children's Hospital was approved officially as a Grade A comprehensive hospital. It was been functioning as a teaching hospital since it was founded. It also became an affiliated hospital to the Guangzhou Medical College in 1997.

The guangzhou pediatric critical care center is one of the priority on the agenda of the guangzhou municipality in the 21st century. The center is composed of an emergency department, an intensive care unit and a neonatal intensive care unit. Seriously ill pediatric patients and neonatal infants are referred to the center from all over the province. The center occupies about 1500 square meters. It provides 15 observation beds, 27 care beds, and 48 in-patient beds. The center has a series of advanced medical instruments such as ventilators, multi-channels, cardio-electric monitors and a pulse oxymeter, to name a few, more than 120 pieces of equipment and an ambulance are allocated. Along with the neonatal ICU, the pediatric intensive care unit can also be used for high-operative children such as cardiothoracic, cerebral urinary, neonatal, otolaryngologic and general surgery. Today, the medical facilities of the center have reached a considerably advanced level for hospitals in China.
The department of neonatology is one of the priorities of the ministry of health of guangdong province and guangzhou city. The following procedures are considered to be at advanced levels in China. The critical care for at risk neonates, the nursing for low birth weight infants, the blood exchange therapy for severe hyperbilirubinemia, high frequency ventilation, the therapy for neonatal air leakage syndrome. In recent years, we have successfully treated about 1000 cases such as: extremely low body weight infants with 700 grams respiratory distress syndrome,severe pneumonia, severe congential heart disease, critical septicemia, hperbilirubinemia, severe hypoxic ischemic,encephalopathy, intracranial hemorrhage, necrotizing enterocolities, respiratory failure,pulmonnary hemorrhage,severe hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, as well as blood exchange therapy for severe septicemia, have achieved remarkable results.
The division of neurology has earned its reputation through its excellent academic work since the 1960's, in the early 1990's, it developing strategic planning. Now it has a well-equipped ward with 30 beds and an investigation lab in which EEG,BAEP,TCD,EMG,MCV, and Cranial, Ultra-sonograph-B are applied to make diagnosis and aid in the treatment. CT scans can also be used to investigate the diseases of patients. Intelligent screening tests, psychology tests and behavior evaluations are the clinical techniques commonly used in daily practices. Occupational, physical and oxygen therapy, as well as speech therapy, are effective in the treatment of neurological diseases and rehabilitation. Many research projects have been carried out over the past ten years.
The cardiology division and the open heart surgery program were developed in 1984. In 1989, they were organized into a new department combining cardiovascular medicine with cardiovascular surgery. It provides 27 beds. In addition to the routine operations on children with patent ductus ateriosus, ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect and tetralogy of fallot, the department of cardiovascular surgery has successfully performed procedures on patients with complex congenital heart disease such as pulmonary atrisia, double outlet right ventricle. The open heart surgeries for patients under two years old and less than 10kg in body weight, account for 41.2% if surgeries performed. The mortality rate of these operations is less than 3%. The accuracy rate of pre-operation diagnosis made by echocardiography, are over 99%. The procedure of balloon atrial septostomy, under two dimensional echocardiographic monitoring, as a palliative operation on new born infants with complex congenital heart disease, was successfully performed by cardiologists of this hospital and it was first reported in China.
The division of pediatric general surgery was developed in the 1950's and now a series of standard procedures have been established. The operations for problems of the stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum anus, liver, spleen, gallbladder, and pancreas as well as the retroperitoneal cavity, can be done by our experts. The excision of colonic polyps through fibercolonoscope in children, was one of the earliest procedures in hospitals in the guangzhou area. The radical-operation for congenital megacolon, after forty years of clinical application, has now been apredominant procedure in the hospital. With the application, of these new procedures, the operative therapy for the complex congenital deformities such as intestinal atresia, the congenital diaphragmatic hernia, esophageal atresia and omphalocele, have achieved better results. The department if Stomatology in our hospital was established in 1983. In the Out-patient department of Stomatology, there is an operation room and an x-ray examination room as well as a bright, comfortable consulting room. The department provides 9 beds for in-patients, having a series of special devices of whole field x-ray machines for the maxillofacial region and so forth. They can carry out a series of operations such as stomatic reparation, correction of stomatic deformity, maxillofacial tumour, cephalocervical plastic operations, reparation of infants and young children's harelip and palatoschisis, maxillo-facial beauty operation. Disease of the teeth and dental pulp, treatment of stomatic mucosa, health care of children's stomatic cavity as well as children's mucosa, health care of children's stomatic cavity as well as children's disease of stomatic medicine and surgery. Over 200 operations of infant and young children with harelips and palatoschisis have been performed in the past three years. The youngest age of the operative child was two months. Nursing work is an important part of our medical work. The developing program of the hospital nursing care, formulated by the nursing department, is on the basis of the entire hospital development program and the standard of care and administration of a grade A hospital. Under the leadership of the vice director of the hospital, the administration system of the three grades is carried out by the directors of the nursing department, the head nurse of the departments and divisions. Our hospital has focused on extensive contact with medical scholars in advanced countries around the world since the reform-opening policy was implemented. The sister hospitals between the B.C. Children's hospital in Vancouver, Canada and our hospital, was set up following a Vancouver delegation from Canada visited our hospital in 1986. We invited the famous endocrinologic professor, Dr. Wah Jun Tze and the expert stomatologic professor Dr theresa Chiang form north America as an honorary director and consultant to our hospital. Another sister hospital was established between Japan's Fukuoka Municipal Children's hospital and our hospital in 1991. From then on, we have been inviting foreign experts to come and sent our scholars abroad to study. We have invited over 70 pediatric experts from the United States and Canada to come to our hospital to lecture or for short-term work programs. We have also frequently invited experts from France, Japan and Hong Kong to come for academic exchanges.
In the meantime, twenty scholars from our hospital have been sent abroad for training. They went to such countries as the Unites States, Canada, Japan, Spain, and Israel. All of them are now the technical backbone of the hospital after completing they training and returning to guangzhou. So the specialization of cardiovascular diseases, the neonatal intensive care unit, the intensive care unit, stomology. Oto-laryngololgym anesthesia, endocrinology, neurologic, rehabilitation, nursing and neonatal surgery, as well as general surgery, have made great advances. The "international outpatient and emergency symposium" and the "great international symposium of hospital administration" as well as the "administration of medical instruments symposium", had experts from around china and the world attend at or in association with our hospital. Thus the international exchanges of our hospital have been promoted and the level of the medical technology and the skills of the administration have been remarkable increased.
