New Guangzhou-Shenzhen Freeway to Open in 2012

Updated Beijing Time

The Guangshen Riverine Expressway will open to traffic in October 2012. It will be the second expressway connecting Shenzhen and Guangzhou, two economic powerhouse in South-China's Guangdong Province.

The expressway starts at Yueliangwan Road in Nanshan District, stretching through Xin'an, Xixiang, Fuyong and Shajing neighborhoods in Bao'an and Dongguan and ends at Huangpu Thoroughfare in Huangpu District, Guangzhou.

The new expressway is expected to ease traffic pressure on the existing Guangshen Expressway. The maxium speed for the new freeway will be 100 kph, instead of 120 kph limit on the Guangshen Expressway.

The Guangshen Expressway, opening to traffic in 1994, is 122 km long, while the new freeway will be 97 km long.

Work on the Shenzhen section started in March. The 30-kilometer section will cost 11.2 billion yuan (US.64 billion).
