HUANGPU District is located at the central area of the Pearl River Delta, in the east part of Guangzhou and at the lower-reach confluence of the Pearl River and Dongjiang River. It is 148km to Shenzhen on the east, close to the Pearl River on the south, 80 nautical miles to Hong Kong. It covers a total area of 119.42km2. According to the general urban planning of Guangzhou, Huangpu District is a main district to attract foreign funds and develop foreign-oriented enterprises in the next 15 years. The planned land for development is 55.8 km2, among which area able for commercial development is 36.08 km2. Huangpu District is on the south to the Tropic of Cancer., between longitude 113゜27'39"~113゜27'51" east and latitude 23゜2'25"~23゜9'55" north. The whole landform can be divided into the Pearl River and Dongjiang Delta alluvial plain and erosion platform low downland. The topography is generally high in the north and low in the south; on the plain are mainly platform and low downland. Low downland is in the north and the delta alluvial plain is in the south. Cultivated land on the plain is about 40,000 mu. Huangpu District is positioned at southeast part of Guangzhou, where is the largest Port Huangpu in South China. It is an urban harbor area of Guangzhou and as well as an important gateway of South China for foreign economic, technologic and cultural exchanges. Huangpu District has quite accessible transportation system. Port Huangpu connects with all big coastal cites of China and more than 100 countries and regions worldwide. River shipment can sail upstream to Dongjiang River, Xijiang River and Beijiang River through the Pearl River. Guang-Shen Railway, No.107 State Highway, Guang-Shen Highway and Guangyuandong Expressway pass through the District, connecting it with Guangzhou downtown, Shenzhen and Kowloon. Urban roads and township roads are quite developed. Water and land transport forms an exceptional traffic network. Port Guangzhou (original name was Port Huangpu). Container generating amount of Guangdong Province accounts for 70% of China’s, but the container company of Port Guangzhou has 6 container berths of 35,000T each. In 2003, the container handling capacity of Port Guangzhou is more than 1.7 million. It is estimated that it will reach 3.8 million in 2005. Sui-HK passenger terminal is located at the Guangzhou Economic and Technologic Development Zone. It takes only one hour and fifty minutes for a passenger hovercraft from Hong Kong to the Development Zone.
