Liberian Man Sings His Way To Chinese Hearts
The 7 day 'Star Boulevard' singing competition concluded in late October, with Liberian man Hao Ge (郝歌) winning second prize, on the way becoming a new star in China.
Hao Ge's performances were the most talked-about of the competition, among audiences as well as the event's main director Mr. Bi Fujian.
First Foreigner to Win The Award
Hao Ge looks uncannily like former "World's Best Footballer" George Weah of AC Milan. A graduate of Liberia's Monrovia University, he is a spaceflight engineer by profession. It just so happens, he can sing too! His fascinating voice and feel for music were spoken highly of, by competition judges and audiences alike.
On the final night of competition, dressed in military uniform，he sang a song called 'Why Are The Flowers So Red?' 《花儿为什么这样红》－the theme song of the film classic 'Visitor from the Ice Mountain' 《冰山上的来客》. The performance brought rapturous applause. Later it was revealed Hao Ge had viewed and emulated the film performances again and again, in order to perfect his technique.
Shocking The Director!
"I was shocked by the first song he sang; I thought he was excellent," recalled Mr. Bi Fujian.
"He sang a lot of classical Chinese songs which are hard to express the feelings of, even for Chinese," he continued.
Hao Ge's talents extend beyond singing, to piano and Peking opera.
Both a Performer and Engineer
After his win, Hao Ge signed up with Hua Yi Xing Fang Music Company. He was invited to Liu Huan's concert and sang together with Sun Nan and Na Ying. Last December, he performed in 'The Same Song' with Liu Huan in Zhang Jia Gang. But although he is now busy performing, he's never given up his job as an engineer.
Hao Ge is now applying for Chinese nationality.
