“2008 is a remarkable year, I would say symbolic, for the relations between Italy and Guangdong and even the whole South China,” said Paolo Miraglia del Giudice, Italian Consul General in Guangzhou, on June 2 at a Italian National Day reception held at the Ritz-Carlton, Guangzhou.
Guests at the ceremony, including Vice Governor of Guangdong Lei Yulan, watched a brief yet eloquent film about the extraordinary beauty of Italy’s art and natural scenery. Following the screening, Navigare, a historic Italian fashion house, presented its latest summer collection in its first-ever show in China. Finally, leaders and guests proposed a toast to the Italian and Chinese people, wishing success and prosperity to both countries.
New Consulate Marking 10th Anniversary of Its Opening
November 5th will mark the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Italian Consulate General in Guangzhou, whose new offices are soon to be inaugurated. The new office will include the Italian Trade Commission and Italian Chamber of Commerce, as well as, in the future, more representatives of Italian institutions.
Closer Ties between China and Italy
Relations between Italy and Guangdong have become increasingly close. Trade volume between the two countries exceeded USD $6 billion in 2007, an increase of 27%; in the last few months the number of Chinese tourists to Italy surged an amazing 50%; and the number of Chinese students going to Italy has tripled, showing a progressive strengthening in the cooperation between Chinese and Italian universities.
In Rome: Festival of Chinese Culture and Art

In this event, Guangdong plays an important role: the Guangdong Company of Modern Dance performed in Rome’s Auditorium, which proved to be a great success.
