Kapok, City Flower of Guangzhou

Kapok, also called the Hero Flower, was named the City Flower of Guangzhou in June of 1982 for its characteristics of vigor and struggle.

Kapok mainly grows in south China's Guangdong and Guangxi areas. What is special about this large tropical tree is that the flowers blossom before the leaves grow. It blooms in spring and produces bushy leaves in the summer.

Besides its distinctive look, kapok can also be used as a herbal medicine. It is also a common ingredient in the herbal tea favored by Cantonese. (by Carrot Chan)
