Dongying, a prefecture-level city of Shandong province, is located on the banks of the Yellow River Delta and administers 5 county-level divisions, including 3 districts and 2 counties.

Guangrao County of the city is known as the Site of the ancient state of Qi as well as the birthplace of Sun Wu, a famous military strategist in ancient China.

The city's 350-kilometer coastline borders Laizhou Bay to the east and Bohai Bay to the north.

With its regional advantages, the city played a critical role in the development of the eastern Maritime Silk Road, and it boasts many historical sites, including the Haibei Historical Site and the Tiemenguan Site.

In 2006, a rescue excavation was carried out at the Haibei Historical Site and a variety of relics were unearthed, including bricks, tiles, building components and porcelain shards.

Based on the unearthed relics, archaeologists were able to determine that the site was an ancient wharf for trade during Song and Jin dynasties. The wharf used to be one of the departure ports along the ancient sea route.

铁门关遗址 Tiemenguan Site

The discovery of Haibei Historical Site offers helpful clues to the study on the development of sea routes in northern China during Song and Jin periods. And the Tiemenguan Site, a bustling hub back in Ming and Qing dynasties, had witnessed the development of the port city.
