Travel time from Tianhe district to Nansha will be reduced to 30 minutes after 10 spanking-new metro lines are built and open by 2023.

The 10 new lines, listed in Guangzhou’s third-phase urban rail construction plan (2017-2023) approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, include the eastern extensions of Line 3 and 5, the northern extension of Line 8, Phase Two of Line 7, 13 and 14, as well as new lines 10, 12, 18 and 22.

With a total investment of 219.6 billion yuan, the 10 lines will lengthen out to 258.1 kilometers. By 2023, Guangzhou’s metro system will form a network of 18 lines and its total length will extend to 800 kilometers from the current 309 kilometers, according to the Guangzhou metro authorities.

Two of the new lines, Line 18 and 22, will run through Nansha district at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour. Scheduled to be finished by 2020, they will reduce the travel time from Nansha district to downtown Tianhe to 30 minutes.

The two lines will connect Wanqingsha in Nansha district, Guangzhou South Railway Station, Guangzhou East Railway Station, the Bai'etan area in Haizhu district, Pazhou, Guangzhou Railway Station and Baiyun International Airport, aiming to shorten the travel time to 30 minutes between Nansha and Guangzhou East Railway Station and 45 minutes between Nansha and Baiyun International Airport.

Most of the stations along the two express lines will be built into transfer stations for passenger convenience.
